Getting 0 APR Credit Cards
If you are like a lot of people today, your mail box is full of applications for 0 apr credit cards every week. Not only are these credit card offers common, they are easy to obtain. But, when you think about it for a moment, these 0 apr rates do not seem like a luxury of life, they are almost a necessity.
Average Monthly 0 APR Credit Card Payment
The average credit card apr runs about 20 to 30 percent, but because you pay it monthly as opposed to once a year, you don't consider it a lot of money. Twenty dollars or so a month certainly does not seem like much money, but when you figure it on a yearly basis of just plain interest that doesn't even pay back the money you owe, you realize the wisdom in having 0 apr credit cards.
0 apr credit cards are readily available and you usually can apply online. It's quick, it's easy and it does make sense -- look at all the money you could save.
However, there is another side, a downside, to 0 apr credit cards. Because this credit card is a way to borrow money with no interest, there is a tendency for too many people to use it indiscriminately without thinking about the consequences. There are more than a few people who have accumulated substantial debts on their 0 apr credit card which has led to unnecessary hardships and even financial ruin.
Debt has to be repaid. If you abuse your 0 apr credit card and do not make your credit card payments on time, you will be forced to repay the debt at a much higher interest rate. If you do have a 0 apr credit card, be sure you realize it is not a gift. It is a debt, and like all debt, it has to be paid. Be cautious in the way you use your credit card. Make sure you are always able to make your payments, or you will be faced with trouble you've never dreamed of.
0 apr credit cards are especially enticing for young people who probably don't know much, if anything, about the rules of finance. If you are just getting out into the world, after high school, or college, and don't really understand the need for budgeting yet, a 0 apr credit card can seem like a very special gift – something which will help you now, and which you don't have to worry about until sometime in the distant future. But, nothing could be further from the truth. If you do not use your 0 apr credit card wisely, you will be confronted with a mountain of debt early in your adult life that might take you years and years to pay off. There are cases where paying off credit card debt has taken upwards of 10 years!
